For millions of Americans, excessive sweating is a serious problem, which can interfere with all aspects of daily life. If you suffer from excessive sweating, you are not alone. In fact, excessive sweating, or Hyperhidrosis is a lot more common than you might think. Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition, which causes a person to sweat excessively and unpredictably. People presenting with this condition report sweating even at such times as when they are sitting at rest or when the temperature around them is cool. Over the years, many treatments have come out in order to help those suffering from hyperhidrosis. Several of these treatments, including Botox under the arms or aluminum chloride prescription anti-perspirants, have proven to be somewhat successful. However, many of these treatments do not have truly long-term effects. Finally, there is a lasting solution. Finally, there is miraDry.
The miraDry procedure is a safe and effective non-invasive outpatient procedure, which deactivates sweat glands of the underarms. The procedure is performed in three simple steps. First, the doctor draws temporary markings on the skin as a guide for treatment. Next, local anesthesia is administered for increased comfort. Lastly, the customized miraDry procedure is performed. The total appointment time is about an hour with the actual miraDry treatment lasting only about 40 minutes. The electromagnetic energy delivered to the underarms targets and deactivates sweat glands. The sweat glands of the underarms are essentially eliminated and because these glands do not regenerate, miraDry’s effects are truly long lasting and effective. This is a safe and non-invasive procedure.
According to Miramar Labs, the producers of miraDry, deactivating the sweat glands of the underarms (only about 2% of the body’s sweat glands) does not affect the body’s overall temperature regulation system. Patients usually notice positive effects immediately. Finally, there is a safe and truly effective solution to the highly common and irritating condition of excessive sweating. *

FAQ – MiraDry – nonsurgical reduction of excessive sweating
What is the miraDry procedure?
The miraDry procedure is a safe and effective non-invasive outpatient procedure, which deactivates sweat glands of the underarms. MiraDry offers the longest lasting and best results for excessive underarm sweating. This is a very easy procedure that is performed right in your doctor’s office. The customized treatment is performed using a miraDry system hand piece, which delivers precise electromagnetic energy to the underarms to target and deactivate sweat glands. Essentially, miraDry eliminates underarm sweat glands because these glands are not able to regenerate.
What can I expect the procedure to feel like?
The miraDry procedure is a safe and easy solution to excessive underarm sweating. The procedure involves no painful cuts or incisions. The deliverance of electromagnetic energy to the underarms is customized for each patient. In order to eliminate the possibility of any pain, local anesthesia is applied to the area prior to starting the procedure. You can expect the entire appointment to last about an hour. In order to maximize results, most patients are advised to return for a touch-up procedure about three months after the original treatment.
What happens when I’m done with the procedure?
Not only does miraDry result in lasting effects, the procedure also requires very little recovery time. Your doctor may recommend some over-the-counter pain medication or ice packs to use on the treated area because some minimal swelling or soreness is normal. Some patients have also reported some short-term altered sensations in the underarms. Despite these minor possible issues, most patients report beneficial results immediately.
What results can I expect?
Most patients report a drastic reduction in underarm sweating almost immediately following the miraDry procedure. As with any medical treatment, results may vary by patient.
How long will my results last?
The results of the miraDry procedure are long lasting because miraDry deactivates and eliminates sweat glands from the underarms. These eliminated sweat glands cannot regenerate and therefore there is a dramatic and lasting decrease in the amount of sweat able to be produced by the underarms.
Isn’t it harmful to deactivate underarm sweat glands?
There are about 4 million sweat glands on your body. Only about 2% of these glands are located in the underarms and eliminating this miniscule amount will not affect your body’s abilities to cool itself.
Can miraDry only be used on my underarms?
Currently, the miraDry procedure is recommended for patients that are 18 years and over and suffer from excessive underarm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis). MiraDry cannot be used to treat excessive sweating in other parts of the body.
Why is miraDry my best option for my problem with excessive sweating?
Unlike other treatments, miraDry has a lasting reducing effect on excessive underarm sweating. The goals of other procedures for sweating are to temporarily disable sweat glands or surgically remove these glands. MiraDry is a safe, non-invasive procedure that permanently deactivates sweat glands.
Is this procedure right for me?
MiraDry is recommended to patients 18 years and older who suffer from excessive underarm sweating. If you suffer from excessive sweating, you are not alone. Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition, which causes a person to sweat excessively and unpredictably. If excessive sweating is interfering with your daily life, talk to your doctor about if the miraDry treatment is right for you.
Hyperhidrosis Treatment to Reduce Excessive Underarm Sweating
Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis, while not in itself physically harmful, is a medical condition that can cause feelings of humiliation and embarrassment.
Many people feel self-conscious about being near other people, raising their arms, or hugging, and many may avoid physical activity because it makes them sweat. The excessive sweating may also interfere with a person’s ability to be successful in their job. Underarm sweating can make it appear the person is hot or nervous when in fact they are not.
Millions of people suffer from what is called axillary (underarm) hyperhidrosis, causing their armpits to produce an inordinately large amount of perspiration. This form of hyperhidrosis is called “primary focal hyperhidrosis” and is not caused by any medical condition or drug side effect. In some cases it may be hereditary.
More About Hyperhidrosis
Animals use various means to keep their bodies at an acceptable temperature and to cool themselves when they get overly heated. Elephants use their ears as a cooling device, dogs pant, and pigs cover themselves in mud. Humans sweat. When the sweat evaporates, it takes away some heat and cools down the body.
In humans, many different triggers can activate the sweat glands, including warm temperatures, exercise, nervousness, embarrassment, and fear. In people with hyperhidrosis, the volume of sweat produced by sweat glands is greater than normal and may occur even when the surrounding temperature is cool and they have nothing to be nervous or worried about.
There are about 4 million sweat glands in the human body. Hyperhidrosis is the result of over-active sweat glands. In the case of axillary hyperhidrosis, these glands are in the armpit. With only 2% of the millions of sweat glands located in the underarms, removal or deactivating them will have little effect on the body’s ability to maintain an optimum temperature.
Treatments for Hyperhidrosis
Over the years, many treatments have become available to help those suffering from hyperhidrosis. Several of these treatments, including Botox under the arms, or aluminum chloride prescription antiperspirants, have proven to be somewhat successful. However, many of these treatments don’t have long-term effects and some have serious side effects. Sometimes a doctor will prescribe oral medications that reduce sweating by affecting the nerves. Unfortunately, these medications are associated with side effects including, dry mouth, constipation, increased heart rate, urinary difficulties, and blurry vision.
