What is a CO2 Laser?

CO2 lasers have been used for many years in Medicine. This specific wavelength of light is well absorbed by water. Because of this characteristic they have been used in surgery as a cutting device and in skin rejuvenation and resurfacing. Our skin is 80% water and the CO2 wavelength is attracted to this. In the earlier years when this laser was first introduced for skin rejuvenation, the top layer of the skin, the epidermis, was vaporized or ablated. By removing this entire layer, new tighter, brighter skin replaced the old. Patients had increased collagen production, with a tightening effect, abnormal pigment was removed and wrinkles were markedly reduced. Unfortunately, the “down time” of this treatment was well over 2 weeks, with residual redness lasting as long as 3 months in some patients. Complications also occurred too frequently and the area of treatment was limited to only facial skin. The tightening and resurfacing accomplished with this laser are still considered the gold standard, due to the remarkable results achieved, despite the complications that can occur. With progress of technology, we now have an alternative that can accomplish similar results with a very low risk and complication profile. This new laser uses the same CO2 wavelength in a fractional manner.
In fractional laser resurfacing the laser beam is broken up or fractionated into many small micro beams which separate as they hit the skin. Think of this as Pixels in digital photography or the board in a checkers game. We create thousands of tiny microscopic laser wounds, spaced evenly across the skin, but leaving areas of healthy untreated skin between them. This untreated skin donates migrating cells that quickly heal the injured skin from the sides, not just the bottom. This process, called re-epethielation, occurs over 4 to 5 days, instead of 2 weeks, as in the traditional CO2 laser. The new skin is tighter, the texture finer, pores are decreased in size, and pigmentation markedly improved. *

How many treatments will I need?

Unlike traditional ablative CO2 laser treatments, more than one treatment may be needed to obtain the optimal results. Each treatment is individualized. The percent of skin coverage chosen will determine if one or two treatments will be necessary. In many patients one treatment can accomplish dramatic improvement.

Is this treatment painful?

The “pins and needle”, heat sensation felt during this treatment is tolerated by many patients. To relieve any discomfort, a combination of oral pain medication, topical anesthetic, and anesthetic injections can be used. The treatment is completed in 30 to 40 minutes.

How soon can I return to my normal activities?

This intense treatment will require some “down time”. Since we are ablating and removing some of the top layers of the skin, 3 to 5 days will be needed to allow the new skin to grow and heal. After a few days of your face appearing sun-blistered, the skin will gradually repair and rebuild. In these first few days, topical ointments are applied. Once the new layer of skin forms and peeling is complete, the skin will appear red for up to 2 weeks. Make-up can be applied to hide this.

Can this laser be used on other skin surfaces?

Yes! This laser has been found safe on all skin surface, including neck, arms, hands, chest, and back.

How long will the results last?

The skin will continue to repair and rebuild itself from the inside out over the next several months. Vaginal Atrophy (Atrophic Vaginitis)

Vaginal atrophy is a change in the vagina that develops when there is a significant decrease in levels of the female hormone estrogen. The condition is also called atrophic vaginitis.

Estrogen, which is produced by the ovaries, plays a vital role in keeping vaginal tissues lubricated and healthy. When levels of estrogen are low, vaginal tissue becomes atrophic — thin, dry and shrunken. The vagina may become more prone to inflammation in an atrophic state. Common conditions with low estrogen levels that cause vaginal atrophy include:

• Menopause, when normal, age-related body changes cause the ovaries to decrease their production of estrogen
• Surgical removal of the ovaries before the age of natural menopause, which can be done at the same time as a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus)

KYBELLA® (deoxycholic acid) injection 10 mg/mL
Indication and Important Safety Information

KYBELLA® (deoxycholic acid) injection is indicated for improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat in adults.

The safe and effective use of KYBELLA® for the treatment of subcutaneous fat outside the submental region has not been established and is not recommended.

Contraindications

KYBELLA® is contraindicated in the presence of infection at the injection sites.

Warnings and Precautions

Marginal Mandibular Nerve Injury

Cases of marginal mandibular nerve injury, manifested as an asymmetric smile or facial muscle weakness, were reported in 4% of subjects in the clinical trials; all cases resolved spontaneously (range 1-298 days, median 44 days). KYBELLA® should not be injected into or in close proximity to the marginal
mandibular branch of the facial nerve.

Dysphagia

Dysphagia occurred in 2% of subjects in the clinical trials in the setting of administration-site reactions, eg, pain, swelling, and induration of the submental area; all cases of dysphagia resolved spontaneously (range 1-81 days, median 3 days). Avoid use of KYBELLA® in patients with current or prior history of dysphagia as treatment may exacerbate the condition.

Injection-Site Hematoma/Bruising

In clinical trials, 72% of subjects treated with KYBELLA® experienced hematoma/bruising. KYBELLA® should be used with caution in patients with bleeding abnormalities or who are currently being treated with antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy as excessive bleeding or bruising in the treatment area may occur.

Risk of Injecting Into or in Proximity to Vulnerable Anatomic Structures

To avoid the potential of tissue damage, KYBELLA® should not be injected into or in close proximity (1 cm-1.5 cm) to salivary glands, lymph nodes, and muscles.

Dr. Turowski and his medical staff at New Horizons Center for Cosmetic Surgery have for a couple years, been using ultrasound waves as a non-invasive, non-surgical face and neck tightening procedure called Ultherapy.

Using ultrasound technology, Ultherapy lifts and tones the skin. It does this by targeting the collagen layers deep below the surface. The use of ultrasound imaging allows Dr. Turowski and his team to see these layers of tissue and to place an energy flow in precisely the place where it will be most effective in tightening skin and reducing wrinkles. Microdermabrasion – How does it work? 

Are you looking for a non-surgical way to freshen and rejuvenate the skin on your face or body?  A Microdermabrasion treatment, a less aggressive approach than dermabrasion, uses minimally abrasive instruments to gently sand the skin and remove the thicker, uneven outer layer.  This type of skin rejuvenation is used to treat light scarring, discoloration and sun damage and even stretch marks.

One way to describe a microdermabrasian treatment is by imagining a very fine sand blaster. Microdermabrasian utilizes micro particles of medical grade crystals of baking soda to slough off the top layer (epidermis) of your skin and stimulate new skin growth.  This technique also helps to thicken your collagen, which results in a younger looking complexion. Collagen is a protein, which is abundant when you are a child and makes appearance of skin taut and smooth.  Collagen production declines as we age, resulting in looser, uneven skin.

There is almost no discomfort in microdermabrasion, meaning you won’t need a topical or local anesthetic and there is no recovery or downtime.

We use Advanced Microderm, the only system engineered to utilize medical grade sodium bicarbonate’s all natural properties.  Baking soda allows you to give the same depth of abrasion as aluminum oxide-without any of the potentially harmful side effects.  Aluminum oxide is not to be used on the under-eye area and lips due to the potential risk of cornea scratches and crystal ingestion.  Baking soda residue is not associated with either of these risks.  In addition, it will not leave the skin red or irritated and is beneficial to helping treat acne. Once you have been treated with baking soda, you will never want to have another aluminum oxide treatment again.

Applying LATISSE

1. Before applying LATISSE 0.03% daily, insure your face is clean and all makeup and contact lenses are removed.
2. Remove the applicator from its tray.  Then, holding the sterile applicator horizontally, place 1 drop of LATISSE solution on the area of the applicator closest to the tip, but not on the tip.
3. Immediately draw the applicator carefully along the skin at the base of the upper eyelashes (where the eyelashes meet the skin) going from the inner part of your lash line to the outer part.
4. Blot any excess solution beyond the eyelid with a tissue.
5. Dispose of the applicator after 1 use.  Repeat for opposite eyelid, using a new, sterile applicator to help minimize any potential for contamination from 1 eyelid to another.

Hyperhidrosis Treatment to Reduce Excessive Underarm Sweating

Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis, while not in itself physically harmful, is a medical condition that can cause feelings of humiliation and embarrassment.

Many people feel self-conscious about being near other people, raising their arms, or hugging, and many may avoid physical activity because it makes them sweat. More About Hyperhidrosis

Animals use various means to keep their bodies at an acceptable temperature and to cool themselves when they get overly heated. Elephants use their ears as a cooling device, dogs pant, and pigs cover themselves in mud. Humans sweat. When the sweat evaporates, it takes away some heat and cools down the body.

In humans, many different triggers can activate the sweat glands, including warm temperatures, exercise, nervousness, embarrassment, and fear. In people with hyperhidrosis, the volume of sweat produced by sweat glands is greater than normal and may occur even when the surrounding temperature is cool and they have nothing to be nervous or worried about.

There are about 4 million sweat glands in the human body. Hyperhidrosis is the result of over-active sweat glands. In the case of axillary hyperhidrosis, these glands are in the armpit. With only 2% of the millions of sweat glands located in the underarms, removal or deactivating them will have little effect on the body’s ability to maintain an optimum temperature.

Treatments for Hyperhidrosis

Over the years, many treatments have become available to help those suffering from hyperhidrosis. Several of these treatments, including Botox under the arms, or aluminum chloride prescription antiperspirants, have proven to be somewhat successful.
