Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment for Hair Restoration Chicago

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment for Hair Restoration ChicagoPlatelet Rich Plasma Therapy, either as a stand-alone treatment or as a supplement to hair transplantation, is now available to men and women looking to restore their hair.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments have been used for years to help the body heal itself. Muscle tears, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, arthritis and rotator cuff injuries are just a few of the conditions successfully treated with PRP. One famous use of the PRP is the Vampire face lift procedure

Now, PRP has emerged as a non-surgical based therapy for natural stimulation for thinning hair. It’s used either in combination with hair transplantation; such as Dr. Turowski do with the ARTAS robotic hair transplantation or Neograft system, or as a treatment unto itself.

How PRP Treatment for Hair Restoration Works

The platelets in platelet rich plasma can cause growth of hair follicles by stimulating the stem cells located in the skin at the base of the hair follicle (dermal papillae). The blood vessels in the dermal papillae nourish all the hair follicles and bring nutrients and oxygen to the lower layers of the skin cells.

Injecting the specially prepared platelets into an area promotes healing and accelerates the formation of new cellular growth. Using PRP in hair restoration stimulates inactive or newly implanted hair follicles into an active growth phase.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment Procedure for Hair Restoration

After fully acquainting you with the steps of the PRP procedure, a small amount of blood is drawn in the same way as you would have it taken at your physician’s office as part of a routine checkup.

The blood is spun in a centrifuge where the platelet rich plasma is separated and removed from the rest of the blood. The platelets and other vital growth proteins rise to the top of the tube. The solution is aspirated, transferred into the syringe.

In case of the hair transplantation procedure PRP is then injected into the donor and recipient sites on the scalp. This stimulates the growth of the transplanted follicular units as well as healing of the donor site in the back of the scalp.

In case of a standalone treatment for hair restoration (not in conjunction with hair transplantation procedure) topical anesthesia cream is applied to the area being treated. A special needling device is then used to stimulate the cells in the scalp and activate PRP (not needed in hair restoration procedure situation). PRP solution is then injected into the thinning areas of the scalp.
