Using the principle of selective photothermolysis, these treatments target different chromophores in the skin, which selectively absorb the laser or light energy as heat and yield the desired response. These optimal wavelengths of light clear vascular and pigmented lesions by targeting the chromophores of hemoglobin (for vascular lesions) and melanin (for pigmented lesions). These damaged lesions are then cleared by the body, removing the appearance of the lesion from the skin. Pigmented lesions undergo a mild desquamation and slough off within two or three days, while the vascular lesions blanch and then resolve within 10 to 14 days.

As we age the volume of our faces decreases, resulting in a hollow, tired look. It is comparable to a balloon deflating leaving wrinkles and folds. In the past we have tried to correct this aging appearance with facial fillers. Sculptra Aesthetic is a new facial injectable approved by the FDA. It is unique from other facial injectables because of it’s ability to safely replace lost collagen over time. We call this product a “volumizer,”not a filler. Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a synthetic biodegradable polymer that is both absorbable and biocompatible. This same substance has been used in absorbable sutures in surgical procedures for over twenty years. These small particles of ply-L-lactic acid are rehydrated in a sterile water solution, which allows us to safely inject unique areas of the face which have lost facial fat. The injections are performed over 3 to 4 treatment sessions separated by 6 to 8 weeks.

Sculptra’s ability to stimulate collagen production results in a fuller more volumized face. The results are not a “quick fix”,but gradually improve the lost facial fat and volume over time with each injection session. The results are a natural looking appearance. Studies have shown that results may last up to 24 months. Periodic touch ups will help maintain the new natural appearance of a more youthful face.

Dr Leonard Lu has special interest in peripheral nerve surgery and underwent postgraduate training in this field.

Peripheral nerves

What is a Peripheral Nerve?

Nerves run throughout the body, carrying messages for movement and sensation. The nervous system is divided into two parts – the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.

The central nervous system lies in the “center” of the body and is made up of the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system extends out from the central nervous system to the extremities, such as the abdomen, groin, knee hands and feet.

Peripheral Nerve Problems?

As nerves travel through the body, certain areas along their course are “tighter” than others, causing problems for the nerve and its function. In these areas, nerve compression can result, characterized by numbness, tingling or chronic pain. Areas of tightness can be in the groin, hands, feet or legs. One of the most common types of compression is carpal tunnel syndrome. Factors leading to nerve compression include diabetes, trauma or injury, chemotherapy, toxins or conditions which are unknown. In many diabetics, the nerves supplying the extremities of the body swell and stiffen, leading to the same symptoms as nerve compression. This condition is known as diabetic neuropathy. For some patients the pain and numbness from diabetic neuropathy is treatable, but not every patient is a candidate for surgery.

Some peripheral nerve problems are due to injured nerves, not due to compression. In those cases, a neuroma can result. This is an abnormal swelling of an injured nerve, resulting in pain, paresthesias (zinging sensation), and numbness. In that case, the injured nerve is typically found, trimmed back, and buried in muscle and soft tissue to prevent it from causing further pain.

Neuromas and Morton’s Neuroma?

When a nerve is cut, the piece of nerve that is beyond the cut point eventually dies, however, the cut end of nerve will send out multiple sprouts in the direction of the nerve growth factor in all directions and eventually cluster and form a knot of nerve fibres. This eventually leads to the formation of a neuroma. If it is in a place on your foot where you put a lot of pressure, it will become very painful. Morton’s Neuroma is another type of peripheral nerve problem in the foot. The pain is caused by the repetitive compression of the common plantar digital nerve. This nerve lies between the heads of the metatarsal bones. Consequently, the neuroma that develops is not a true neuroma, but rather a manifestation of chronic nerve compression.

We Provide Surgical Treatments For:

Chronic Headache (Occipital, Frontal or Temporal Neuralgia) Upper & Lower Extremity Neuropathies: Carpal, Cubital, Tarsal Tunnel Diabetic Symptomatic Neuropathy (Extremity Numbness and/or Pain) Groin Pain Following Surgery (Inguinal hernia, Hysterectomy, Abdominoplasty) Knee pain following Knee Replacement Amputation Stump Pain, Foot Drop, Meralgia Paresthetica Peripheral Nerve Tumors, Brachial Plexus Injury, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Acute Nerve Injury Following Surgery or Trauma

Upper Extremity

What Causes This Type Of Pain?

There are several nerve related problems that affect the upper extremities. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most common. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome causes numbness and tingling in the thumb, index and middle fingers. Many times these sensations in the hand awaken patients at night, or their hands may go to sleep during normal activities. This numbness and tingling may come and go, or may be present all the time. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by the median nerve being pinched or compressed at the wrist in the “Carpal Tunnel”.

Numbness in the little and ring finger may be attributed to Cubital Tunnel Syndrome which causes numbness and tingling in the little finger and the ring finger. Patients may experience weakness in their grip, begin to drop objects, and have trouble opening doors or jars. Also fine motor skills such as buttoning shirts may be difficult. Cubital Tunnel is caused by the ulnar nerve being pinched or compressed at the elbow in the “Cubital Tunnel”.

Radial Tunnel Syndrome causes numbness and tingling in the back of the hand. This is caused by compression of the radial nerve on the forearm in the “Radial Tunnel”.

Many patients have pain in all three nerve distributions referred to as neuropathy. Neuropathy is caused by systemic diseases, the most common of which is diabetes. Patients who are “Pre-diabetic” (those who are overweight with high cholesterol and high blood pressure) exhibit neuropathy symptoms similar to that of diabetic patients. Other causes of neuropathy can include chemotherapy (Vincristine, Thalidomide, Taxol and Cisplatin are common chemotherapy medications that have been proven to cause neuropathy), certain forms of arthritis, thyroid disorders, leprosy, alcoholism, drug use, heavy metal toxicity, and vitamin deficiencies. Still there are many types of neuropathy in which the cause is not known. This is referred to as idiopathic neuropathy.

There are two main types of neuropathy. The first is when the nerve itself has a problem with the body attacking the lining of the nerves. This is a small fiber neuropathy which cannot be treated with surgery. The second is a “Compressive Neuropathy” which is caused by pressure on the nerve like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This type of neuropathy may be treatable by surgically relieving the areas of compression on the nerves caused by the surrounding tissues. Diabetics and “pre-diabetics” often get compression neuropathies. This is because in diabetics the nerves are swollen. When sugar (glucose) from the blood goes into the nerve it changes to sorbitol (another sugar). This chemical reaction causes a greater number of water molecules to enter the nerve causing swelling. The swollen nerves run through tight anatomical tunnels in the body. When swollen nerves are in tight tunnels they get compressed causing pain and numbness. By releasing the areas of compression, (the tight tunnels) sensation can be restored and pain decreased. This is the same operation has been done for carpal tunnel syndrome for many years. The success rate of nerve decompression surgery for diabetic and “pre-diabetic patients is in the eighty-percent range. Decompression of the nerves can reduce or eliminate pain and improve.

Are There Non-Surgical Treatment Options?

Patients usually first try Carpal Tunnel splints at night and during repetitive motions such as typing. Some patients wrap a towel around the elbow to prevent it from being bent at night while sleeping to relieve the pressure in the ulnar nerve. Patients who have neuropathy should first consult their primary care doctor to determine if their type neuropathy is caused by an underlying disease that can be treated, such as a thyroid disorder, vitamin deficiency

Lower extremity

Multiple nerve-related problems can affect the lower extremities. Peripheral neuropathy, Morton’s neuromas and nerve injuries/neuromas (due to trauma or surgery) are some of the conditions that respond to surgical treatments, decreasing, and in many cases eliminating, pain.

Neuropathy

What Causes Neuropathy?

Many types of neuropathy are caused by chronic diseases, the most common of which is diabetes. Patients who are “Pre-diabetic”, those who are overweight with high cholesterol and high blood pressure exhibit neuropathy symptoms similar to that of diabetic patients. Other causes of neuropathy can include chemotherapy (Vincristine, Thalidomide, Taxol and Cisplatin are common chemotherapy medications that have been proven to cause neuropathy), Lyme’s disease, certain forms of arthritis, thyroid disorders, leprosy, alcoholism, drug use, heavy metal toxicity, and vitamin deficiencies. Still there are many types of neuropathy in which the cause is not known. This is referred to as idiopathic neuropathy.

Compressive neuropathy is caused by pressure on the nerve similar to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This type of neuropathy can be corrected by surgically relieving the areas of compression on the nerves caused by the surrounding tissues. Diabetics and “pre-diabetics” most commonly have compression neuropathies. By releasing the areas of compression (the tight tunnels) sensation can be restored and pain decreased. This is the same operation has been done for carpal tunnel syndrome for many years. The success rate of nerve decompression surgery for diabetic and “pre-diabetic” patients is in the eighty-percent range. Decompression of the nerves can reduce or eliminate pain, improve sensation and balance and prevent ulcerations and amputations.

Are There Non-Surgical Treatment Options for Neuropathy?

Patients should first consult their primary care doctor to determine if their type neuropathy is caused by an underlying disease that can be treated, such as a thyroid disorder, vitamin deficiency or diabetes. Treatment of the disease can frequently provide relief for the symptoms. Some anesthesia pain management doctors have medical treatment options for those patients who are not healthy enough to undergo surgery or for those who are not good surgical candidates.

Who Is A Candidate For Neuropathy Surgery?

Surgery is an option once it is determined that your neuropathy is a “Compression Neuropathy” and that you are a good candidate for surgery. There are different physical examination and neurologic tests that together determine if you are likely to benefit from surgery.

What Can I Expect During and After Neuropathy Surgery?

Nerve decompression surgery is an outpatient procedure that takes about two hours. A general anesthetic is administered by an Anesthesiologist and using microsurgical techniques 3-4 incisions are made: one on the top of the foot, one up by the knee on the outside of the leg, one by the calf, and one on the inside of the ankle. Once the nerve is identified, it is followed to the area of compression and the tight band (the top of the tunnel) that is compressing the nerve is released, similar to what is done during carpal tunnel surgery. After the surgery, a simple compressive dressing is placed on the leg and the patient is transferred to the recovery room. There are some patients that notice an immediate difference in there pain as they wake up in the recovery room, others it can take up to several months depending on the amount of compression and the degree of nerve damage from the compression. The patient is sent home and asked to use a walker or crutches for the first week to minimize the amount of pressure placed on the operative leg. After the first week the dressing is removed and the patient may get back into a normal shoe and sock. The final sutures are removed 2-3 weeks after surgery and at this time the patient is released to normal activity. Patients are allowed to immediately walk on the operated leg but we try and limit activity and bending at the ankle to allow proper wound healing.

As the nerves regenerate and grow some patients may experience neuro-regenerative sensations such as shooting, stabbing or electrical types of pain. This is a good sign showing the nerve is growing. As the nerve continues to grow, the numbness the patient had before surgery will improve and the neuro-regenerative pain will improve.

Are There Any Risks Involved With Neuropathy Surgery?

The biggest risk with this operation is that patients may still be left with areas of pain or numbness or there might be no change at all in the amount of numbness and/or pain. The most common risks associated with any type of surgical procedure include minor infections and scaring. Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, may slow the healing process increasing the risk of infection. Other risks include an increase in pain (which is usually the progression of the neuropathy and not an operative complication) or DVT which are very uncommon.

Morton’s Neuromas

What Causes Morton’s Neuromas?

Morton’s Neuroma is another type of peripheral nerve problem in the foot caused by the repetitive compression of the common plantar digital nerve. This nerve lies between the heads of the metatarsal bones. Consequently, the neuroma that develops is not a true neuroma, but rather chronic nerve compression. Tight shoes and high heels can intensify this type of pain. If the Morton’s Neuroma has already been operated on by another physician and he/she cut the nerve, then the Morton’s Neuroma is a true neuroma and the nerve needs to be resected. For this type of Morton’s Neuroma see the next section on nerve injuries.

Are There Non-Surgical Treatment Options for Morton’s Neuromas?

Morton’s Neuroma symptoms can often be alleviated by wearing flat, wide-toe shoes or Orthotic devices made by a podiatrist. Other treatments include the use of arch supports or custom-fitted shoes to redistribute weight away from the area.

Who Is A Candidate For Morton’s Neuroma Surgery?

Patients who are under the age of 75 that are in good health with abnormal physical and neurologic tests are typically good surgical candidates.

What Can I Expect During and After Morton’s Neuroma Surgery?

Morton’s Neuroma surgery is an outpatient procedure taking about and hour. A general anesthetic is used in most cases though in rare instances a spinal block may be used. Once the nerve is identified, the area of compression is released. A dressing is placed and the patient is transferred to the recovery room. There are some patients that notice an immediate difference in there pain as they wake up in the recovery room, others it can take up to several months depending on the amount of compression and the amount of time since the compression presented. The patient is sent home and asked to use a walker or crutches for the first week to minimize the amount of pressure placed on the operative foot. After the first week the dressing is removed and the patient may put on a shoe and sock. The final sutures are removed three weeks after surgery and at this time the patient is released to normal activity.

Are There Any Risks Involved With Morton’s Neuroma Surgery?

The biggest risk with this operation is that patients may still be left with areas of pain or there is no change in the amount of pain. The most common risks associated with any type of surgical procedure include bleeding, infection and scaring. Other risks include an increase in pain (which is usually the progression of the neuropathy not an operative complication) or DVT which are very uncommon.

Nerve Injury

What Causes Nerve Pain Due To An Injury?

When a nerve gets injured due to a traumatic injury or surgery the damaged portion of the nerve, the neuroma, causes shooting, stabbing and/ or throbbing pain. There are operations for some of these nerve injuries that can decrease and in most cases eliminate the pain.

Are There Non-Surgical Treatment Options for Nerve Injury Pain?

Patients should first consult their primary care doctor to determine if the cause of the pain is nerve related. Also there are pain management specialists that may be able to help to diagnose and sometimes manage the pain especially for patients that are not good surgical candidates.

Who Is A Candidate For Nerve Surgery?

Surgery is an option once it is determined that the pain is from a neuroma and that you are a good candidate for surgery. Nerve blocks are used to determine which nerve is causing the pain. This is done by injecting the area surrounding the nerve with a local anesthesia similar to what a dentist would use on a patient undergoing dental work. The nerve block should last several hours and will allow the patient to see how the involved are will feel after surgery. After several hours the pain that existed before the block will return.

Patients that are in good health and have appropriate responses to the local anesthesia block may be good candidates for surgery.

What Can I Expect During and After Nerve Surgery?

Neuroma surgery is an outpatient procedure taking about and hour. A general anesthetic is administered by an Anesthesiologist. Using microsurgical techniques the damaged nerve is identified, and the neuroma is cut out and the nerve is buried into muscle. A dressing is placed and the patient is transferred to the recovery room. There are some patients that notice an immediate difference in there pain as they wake up in the recovery room, others it can take up to several months.

Are There Any Risks Involved With Nerve Surgery?

The biggest risk with this operation is that patients may still be left with areas of pain or there is no change in the amount of pain. The most common risks associated with any type of surgical procedure include bleeding, infection and scaring. Other risks include an increase in pain or DVT which are very uncommon. Unfortunately some patients may continue to have pain and their body never responds to removing the nerve. These patients are often thought to have “centralized pain” which means their pain will not respond to procedures done on the nerve itself and instead need these patients need the expertise of a pain management specialist.

What is EVOLENCE®?

EVOLENCE® dermal filler represents a breakthrough in treating the effects of aging by replacing the collagen you’ve lost with collagen that lasts. A truly novel dermal filler, EVOLENCE® can immediately improve and refresh your appearance by smoothing out and softening unwanted wrinkles and folds, and restoring structure and facial contour in volume-depleted areas. The visible, natural-looking results are achieved immediately, with minimal-to-no downtime, so you can get right back to your daily activities. These immediate results last for at least 6 months (and 50% in one year), so you can avoid the costly repeat treatments often associated with other fillers and your desired results may be achieved in just 1 visit. Remember results may vary.

Why is collagen so important for achieving a refreshed, youthful apperance?

Collagen is nature’s most fundamental and abundant building block. In fact, collagen makes up 70% to 80% of the skin’s dermis, providing structure, strength, and support. Collagen depletes naturally over time as we age, leading to a tired or aged appearance. This happens through the formation of new wrinkles and folds, and changes in facial contour and structure. The natural pace of collagen loss can be accelerated by such factors as sun exposure, genetics, hormonal changes, and smoking. By replacing lost collagen with an advanced collagen compound, EVOLENCE® dermal filler can help enhance and maintain the structure, volume, and naturally younger-looking appearance of your skin.

What makes EVOLENCE® different?

EVOLENCE® dermal filler is made of natural collagen, one of the most prevalent materials in your body. The advanced collagen in EVOLENCE® has been naturally cross-linked, so it mimics the 3-dimensional structure of your skin’s own collagen. This allows it to integrate beautifully and support your skin’s own existing collagen network by adding structure, strength, and volume for a natural look and feel that last. The unique collagen of EVOLENCE®:

Achieves immediate, natural-looking results, so you can walk out of your aesthetic professional’s office looking beautifully refreshed

Causes minimal-to-no swelling or bruising, so you can get right back to daily activities

Does not require a skin pre-test, so you can get results in 1 visit

Although new to the US, EVOLENCE® has been used extensively in Canada, Europe, and Israel for several years.

Where is EVOLENCE® used?

EVOLENCE® is recommended for the correction of moderate-to-deep facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, the ones that appear from your nose to the corners of your mouth (“smile lines”).

Is EVOLENCE® right for me?

Dr Gregory Turowski and the team of physicians at new Horizons will help you determine the best treatment approach for achieving your desired results. Together, you may decide EVOLENCE® dermal filler is right for you if you are seeking a refreshed and naturally younger-looking you. The visible results are immediate—with minimal-to-no downtime post-treatment.

What Is Juvéderm™ Injectable Gel?

As we age, our skin changes. Over time, the natural volume of youthful skin begins to diminish as wrinkles and folds form. But, with Juvéderm™ injectable gel, you don’t have to just sit back and let it happen! Recently approved by the FDA, Juvéderm™ injectable gel is a “next-generation” dermal filler. The smooth consistency gel helps to instantly restore your skin’s volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds, like your “smile lines” or “parentheses” (nasolabial folds—the creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth).?. Developed with safety and longevity in mind, Radiesse is a new generation of injectable filler that features superior versatility for both cosmetic and reconstructive use without surgery.

Juvéderm™ is a smooth consistency gel made of hyaluronic acid—a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration. Your healthcare professional eases Juvéderm™ injectable gel under the skin to provide a smooth, natural look and feel—so everyone will notice (but no one will know)! In fact, studies show superior results of Juvéderm™ compared to a collagen-based dermal filler.* And, almost 90% of all study volunteers who were treated with both Juvéderm™ injectable gel and another dermal filler* preferred Juvéderm™! In addition, Juvéderm™ injectable gel is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is proven to be safe and effective for persons of color.

JUVEDERM™ dermal filler, a ‘next generation’ hyaluronic acid dermal filler approved by the FDA in June 2006, contains the highest concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid of any dermal filler currently available. These attributes provide optimal results with a single treatment of JUVEDERM™ in the majority of patients and deliver sustained results for up to six months or longer.

In addition, JUVEDERM™ dermal filler is the only hyaluronic acid dermal filler developed using a proprietary, technologically advanced manufacturing process that results in a malleable smooth gel that flows easily into the skin, creating a smooth, natural look and feel. All other currently approved hyaluronic acid dermal fillers utilize a gel particle suspension formulation Juvederm is an excellent treatment option for:

Lip enhancement

Deep folds

Facial lines

Wrinkle correction

Volume augmentation of the lips

Shaping facial contours (such as cheeks and chin correcting)

Smile lines (correcting thin, superficial lines around the eyes, mouth and forehead)

MicroLaserPeel treats skin conditions associated with aging and active life styles. MicroLaserPeel is the ideal treatment for those patients that want improved skin with immediate lasting results, little time off, discomfort, or post-treatment care.

Why Profile ContourTM?

Sciton Contour – 2940 Er:Yag is the most versatile system available for MicroLaserPeel and full resurfacing. Profile’s unique technology allows you to select precise levels of ablation and coagulation, while the computer guided scanner ensures maximum precision and treatment uniformity. User selectable depth, rate, and scan pattern make Sciton’s MicroLaserPeel simple, safe, and reproducible.

Does this sound like you?

“I’ ve always been active. Years ago I was unaware of the effects of sun and wind on my skin. Although I don’t feel as old as I sometimes look I’m not ready for surgery or a long recovery process, but I’d love to look as young as I feel!” The “weekend” skin peel, the MicroLaserPeel, treats skin conditions associated with aging and an active lifestyle. You can see real improvements in just a few days.

What is the MicroLaserPeel?

It is a minimal to full epidermal laser peel that precisely removes the outermost layers of the skin. The procedure is individually tailored to the nature of the problem to be corrected: wrinkles, scars, keratoses,or pigmentation problems.

Who should consider a MicroLaserPeel?

The patient looking for better results than microdermabrasion or light chemical peels can offer, yet, still has little time for the healing process.

How is the MicroLaserPeel different from Microdermabrasion?

Generally, microdermabrasion only removes the outer layer (stratum corneum, 10-15 microns) of the skin. Patients may become dissatisfied when the perceived results do not equal expense and the number of procedures required.

The MicroLaserPeel is a minimal to full epidermal peel (20-50 microns). Because this procedure goes deeper into the epidermis, it is the perfect step between microdermabrasion and deeper peels.

How often does a MicroLaserPeel need to be done?

One procedure could be sufficient for at least 6 to12 months, but additional procedures can be performed as required. A package of three to four treatments may be best for you. Your physician will determine what is necessary.

What can the patient expect?

Smoother, healthier more vibrant skin. You will notice a significant and immediate change in skin texture and tightness when compared to microdermabrasion.

What type anesthesia is used?

A topical anesthetic is applied thirty to 45 minutes before the procedure.Micro Peel can also be performed under sedation or anesthesia during other cosmetic procedures.

Do I have to wear any type of dressing or bandage after the procedure?

No! Your physician will prescribe an ointment such as Aquafore or Vaseline. This is used as a barrier to keep the air away from your skin while you grow new epithelium. You will probably use it for one to two days. After that, a moisturizer can be used.

How long is the healing process?

The healing process varies from patient to patient but will generally take from two to four days. The procedure can be performed on Thursday or Friday and you can return to work the following Monday. Immediately following the procedure you will feel as if you have a bad sunburn. You will have minor sloughing and itchiness the following day. By day two, redness will begin to fade and by day three any redness can be easily covered by makeup.

Depending on the size of these unsightly vessels, Dr Turowski may decide to treat the patient with laser, sclerotherapy, or combination of both. Sometimes, surgical removal of the enlarged vessels may be necessary. Sclerotherapy is a technique in which sclerant solution is injected into small vessels of the legs resulting in obliteration of vessels.

What are the advantages of Lumenis’ Nd:YAG technology?

Lumenis’ proprietary Nd:YAG technology provides multiple synchronized pulsing to selectively heat blood vessels of different sizes and depths. The wavelength of light and pulsing characteristics of the system allow the energy to be virtually invisible to the epidermal melanin, thus protecting the skin and allowing treatment of all skin types and tanned skin. Normally only a few pulses of the laser are required to achieve complete closure and sealing of the vessels. The sapphire cooled Nd:YAG treatment head, increases patient comfort.

How does high-tech laser/light technology compare to traditional sclerotherapy?

The combined light sources of IPL and Nd:YAG offer important benefits over injection therapy. The combination of IPL and Nd:YAG therapy allows treatment of injectable leg veins as well as matting and small spider vessels that are often too small to inject. In addition laser / light therapy is fast, less painful; minimally invasive without needles; and typically does not require compression wrapping.

Restylane – A natural beauty lift

Impressions of beauty change with time – as do our faces as we age. With RESTYLANE, you can have a natural beauty lift with the body’s own material. RESTYLANE is a crystal-clear, non-animal, biodegradable gel based on a natural substance, called hyaluronic acid. The gel is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. The result is instantaneous and produces a long-lasting, natural enhancement, gentle and safe to your skin.

Since it was launched in 1996, RESTYLANE has undergone extensive histological and clinical studies with an increasing body of evidence relating to its ease of use, tolerability and effectiveness. Today, more than 1,500,000 treatments have been successfully carried out worldwide.

Restylane is a clear gel plant extract containing hyaluronic acid that is used to fill facial wrinkles, scars and enhance lips. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally occurring in our body that traps water in the skin. As we age the skin produces less of the acid along with diminished production of collagen and elastin. This results in loss of volume, sagging skin and wrinkles. Restylane can help to temporarily diminish appearance of wrinkles by replenishing the lost volume.

How the procedure is performed?

Restylane is injected using a fine needle. It is injected directly under the wrinkle or scar. In case of lips, lips and immediate lip area are injected. Topical or local anesthetic can be used to numb the area. The procedure takes about 15-30 minutes and does not require any recovery time. Mild stinging is common but usually well tolerated. Redness and mild swelling, if any, can usually disappears in 24 hours. Makeup can be applied immediately after the procedure.

How long the Restylane lasts?

Once injected, Restylane integrates within the skin and attracts water. The results are immediate. With time the filler is reabsorbed without a trace. Depending on an individual the results may last from 6-8 months. Further injections or additions of the product can be performed at any time without additional risk.

What are possible side effects of the Restylane injections?

Side effects may include bruising, redness and pain at the injection site. Swelling that lasts up two few days may occur after injection of Restylane into the lips. Since Restylane contains naturally occurring skin substance, hypersensitivity to the product is rare.

Radiesse is the newest non-surgical facial-contouring filler that delivers an immediate and longer lasting result.

Whether you’re longing to reverse the common signs of aging or address a health issue that would otherwise require invasive treatment, you have more options for looking and feeling better with Radiesse. Developed with safety and longevity in mind, Radiesse is a new generation of injectable filler that features superior versatility for both cosmetic and reconstructive use without surgery. What sets Radiesse apart from other dermal fillers? The answer is in its durability, longevity, and versatility. The unique composition of Radiesse provides the immediate visual improvement common with other fillers, plus the benefit of long-lasting results. This is because Radiesse is made of very tiny smooth calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres. The microspheres (particles) form a scaffold through which your body’s own collagen grows, and this produces the desired long-term effect. These unique advantages make Radiesse the ideal choice for facial shaping and contouring, along with other therapeutic applications.

For facial contouring, Radiesse can be used for:

Nasolabial folds

Marionette lines

Cheek augmentation

Non-surgical rhinoplasty

Jaw line

Chin augmentation

No matter what procedure you’re considering, Radiesse features unmatched versatility and years of extensive research and testing to prove its safety and effectiveness. Any form of facial contouring with Radiesse is performed as a non-surgical, minimally-invasive out-patient procedure in a physician’s office. Results are immediate and only require a few treatments with long-lasting effects, which means that Radiesse is also cost-effective, thus saving you time and money. And while treatment results may vary, results typically last months longer with Radiesse, as compared to other fillers. Radiesse currently has the following FDA clearances:

Oral/Maxillofacial Defects

Vocal Fold Insufficiency

Radiographic Tissue Marking

Radiesse is FDA approved for the Facial Aesthtics to include the
treatment of Facial Wrinkles, Folds, and Facial wasting.

What is a CO2 Laser?

CO2 lasers have been used for many years in Medicine. This specific wavelength of light is well absorbed by water. Because of this characteristic they have been used in surgery as a cutting device and in skin rejuvenation and resurfacing. Our skin is 80% water and the CO2 wavelength is attracted to this. In the earlier years when this laser was first introduced for skin rejuvenation, the top layer of the skin, the epidermis, was vaporized or ablated. By removing this entire layer, new tighter, brighter skin replaced the old. Patients had increased collagen production, with a tightening effect, abnormal pigment was removed and wrinkles were markedly reduced. Unfortunately, the “down time” of this treatment was well over 2 weeks, with residual redness lasting as long as 3 months in some patients. Complications also occurred too frequently and the area of treatment was limited to only facial skin. The tightening and resurfacing accomplished with this laser are still considered the gold standard, due to the remarkable results achieved, despite the complications that can occur. With progress of technology, we now have an alternative that can accomplish similar results with a very low risk and complication profile. This new laser uses the same CO2 wavelength in a fractional manner.
In fractional laser resurfacing the laser beam is broken up or fractionated into many small micro beams which separate as they hit the skin. Think of this as Pixels in digital photography or the board in a checkers game. We create thousands of tiny microscopic laser wounds, spaced evenly across the skin, but leaving areas of healthy untreated skin between them. This untreated skin donates migrating cells that quickly heal the injured skin from the sides, not just the bottom. This process, called re-epethielation, occurs over 4 to 5 days, instead of 2 weeks, as in the traditional CO2 laser. The new skin is tighter, the texture finer, pores are decreased in size, and pigmentation markedly improved.

How many treatments will I need?

Unlike traditional ablative CO2 laser treatments, more than one treatment may be needed to obtain the optimal results. Each treatment is individualized. The percent of skin coverage chosen will determine if one or two treatments will be necessary. In many patients one treatment can accomplish dramatic improvement.

Is this treatment painful?

The “pins and needle”, heat sensation felt during this treatment is tolerated by many patients. To relieve any discomfort, a combination of oral pain medication, topical anesthetic, and anesthetic injections can be used. The treatment is completed in 30 to 40 minutes.

How soon can I return to my normal activities?

This intense treatment will require some “down time”. Since we are ablating and removing some of the top layers of the skin, 3 to 5 days will be needed to allow the new skin to grow and heal. After a few days of your face appearing sun-blistered, the skin will gradually repair and rebuild. In these first few days, topical ointments are applied. Once the new layer of skin forms and peeling is complete, the skin will appear red for up to 2 weeks. Make-up can be applied to hide this.

Can this laser be used on other skin surfaces?

Yes! This laser has been found safe on all skin surface, including neck, arms, hands, chest, and back.

How long will the results last?

The skin will continue to repair and rebuild itself from the inside out over the next several months. This will allow for stimulation of new collagen to occur, resulting in a tighter, smoother, more uniform surface appearance. The changes that occur in the epidermis and dermis are permanent. Good skin care and sun-protection will help maintain the results for years.

If you are looking for a tighter, firmer, smoother skin without going under surgery, Velasmooth is the option for you! This treatment reduces the appearance of cellulite to safely and effectively re-contour the skin’s surface.

Velasmooth tm is new and revolutionary medical device that safely and effectively treats cellulite. VelaSmooth uses the elos technology of combined energies – Bi-Polar Radio Frequency and Infrared Light – plus tissue mobilization using a deep tissue vacuum massage. The synergy of the three components makes the VelaSmooth an effective treatment and the only medical cellulite solution on the market. In addition, VelaSmooth treatments are non-invasive, providing patients’ safe, comfortable treatments with no downtime. Patients describe the treatment as a warm, relaxing massage.

Treatment areas:

Hips (saddlebags)

Abdomen (love handles)

Buttocks

Arms

Calves

Neck

Bra line

In clinical studies conducted throughout North America, physicians have reported that 100% of their patients in the studies noted some improvement. Physicians took circumferential measurements of treated areas – like thighs, hips and arms and noted as much as a 4 cm reduction in the circumference of these body parts as well as smoothing and skin tightening effects.

VelsSmooth increases oxygen intracellular diffusion by heating adipose tissue to a depth of 5-15 mm, while heating subcutaneous fat to a depth of up to 5mm, while safeguarding the skin from damage. Tissue mobilization is facilitated by rotating, self-cleaning electrodes to ensure excellent coupling with the skin.

Bi-Polar RF is controllable and predictable. The RF of elos technology flows between the two electrodes of the application head, delivering maximum-targeted energy to the treatment area.

Ergonomic, lightweight handpiece and a treatment requires little pressure which makes this procedure comfortable for the medical staff member who is performing the treatment.

Most patients require 8-10 treatments administered 2 times a week for 4-5 weeks. A monthly follow-up treatment is advised but physicians are finding that the treatment results are lasting for months after the last treatment in the initial series. Physicians are charging between $150 and $200 per treatment and most are offering treatment package pricing.

What is the FRAXEL SR Laser Treatment?

Until now, all (conventional) available laser treatments allowed for good results but at the cost of significant side effects, risks, and prolonged healing and recovery times or, on the other hand, generally fewer risks but at the cost of undergoing numerous treatments over several months and limited improvements. The Fraxel SR Laser Treatment is an innovative new technology that offers best of both old systems – excellent results without sacrificing safety, minimized side effects, drastically reduced healing time and much shorter therapy. The treatment significantly improves the texture of the skin, reduces wrinkles, skin discolorations such as age spots and sun spots on face, hands or anywhere on the body, as well as smoothes out acne scars.

How does the Fraxel Laser Treatment work?

Unlike traditional laser resurfacing, which removes the entire skin surface at one time, the Fraxel laser is selectively applied to the skin, creating a pattern of evenly spaced microscopic laser “spots” surrounded by untreated normal skin. Because the skin surrounding the spots is not treated at the same time, the healing takes place very quickly and treatment does not cause visible wounds. In subsequent sessions the rest of the untreated skin is targeted by the laser.

How many treatments will I need?

Each session treats approximately 15-20% of the skin surface. Typically 3 to 5 treatments – each from one week to one month apart – are recommended depending on the severity of the problem. Most patients will notice some improvement after a single treatment. “Maintenance” treatments can be performed as needed.

Where on the face or body can Fraxel Laser be used?

Fraxel Laser can be used anywhere on the body where the skin would benefit from resurfacing. Unlike old laser treatments, Fraxel allows for rejuvenating the neck and dcollet, which were not treatable with previously available methods.

Are Fraxel Laser treatments safe?

The Fraxel laser technology has been approved by FDA. The treatment is safe and no incidents of scarring or infection have been reported. Some mild blistering and/or temporary skin discoloration can occur, especially in darker-skinned patients, when more aggressive treatment is performed.

Is the Fraxel laser treatment painful?

Usually treatments feel like a prickling sensation and are well tolerated by patients.
To relieve any discomfort, a topical anesthetic ointment is applied prior to treatment.
For more aggressive treatments oral pain medicine or anesthetic injections may be used.

How long does each treatment session take?

Each treatment session may take anywhere from 10 to 45 minutes, depending upon the size of the area treated.

How soon can I return to my normal activities?

In most cases patients can resume all normal activities immediately. No special aftercare is needed for the treated areas and patients can begin regular skin care regimen right after the treatment. There may be some redness and swelling in the treated areas and a mild burning or itching sensation, which usually disappears in a few hours. Redness may persist for a few days and the skin may take on a “bronzed” appearance. As the microscopic spots are shed over the course of a week or so, the skin color will return to normal. If anesthetic injections are used, there may be some bruising in the injected areas. Very rarely, there may be crusting or blistering in some areas with more aggressive treatments.
If an oral medication for pain or sedation is given, a patient should not drive a car until the next morning.

When will I see the results?

Most patients will see some improvement within a few days after the procedure. Yet, the true miracle of the treatment is in “remodeling” the body collagen in the deep layers of the skin. Therefore, the patient will notice a gradual improvement and the skin smoothing and tightening over the period of up to a year following a series of treatments.

Are Fraxel laser treatments permanent?

The changes in the epidermis and dermal collagen induced by Fraxel Laser treatment are permanent; nevertheless, time, sun exposure, and gravity will continue to take its toll. The Fraxel Laser “turns back the clock”, but doesn’t keep the clock from ticking.

The Thermage procedure is the only FDA approved non-invasive treatment that delivers tighter skin, renewed facial contours and healthier collagen. This is very important since collagen is the building block that provides structure to the skin.

The Thermage procedure employs a patented radiofrequency (RF) technology called ThermaCool. It has been clinically proven to tighten and gently lift skin to smooth out wrinkles and renew facial contours. This non-surgical procedure is fast and easy and requires no downtime from normal activities. Unlike lasers, the procedure can be performed on patients of all skin types. The ThermaCool device has been cleared by the FDA for the non-invasive treatment of facial wrinkles and rhytids.

Thermage FAQ

How does it work?

The ThermaCool system uses a sophisticated treatment tip called ThermaTip, which delivers a controlled amount of RF energy. With each touch to the skin, the ThermaTip device uniformly heats a large volume of collagen in the deeper layers of the skin and its underlying tissue, while simultaneously protecting the outer layer of the skin with cooling. This deep uniform heating action causes deep structures in your skin to immediately tighten. Over time, new and remodeled collagen is produced to further tighten skin, resulting in healthier, smoother skin and a more youthful appearance.

What does the Thermage procedure feel like?

With each touch of the ThermaTip device, you will experience a brief, deep heating sensation as the RF energy is delivered to your skin and underlying tissue. This deep heating sensation is your indication that your collagen is reaching effective temperatures for tightening. The operator controls the amount of energy delivered to balance procedural comfort with maximum results. The ThermaTip device is cooled before, during, and after heating to protect your skin and make the treatment more comfortable. Prior to treatment, an anesthetic cream may be applied to enhance your comfort. Additionally, dr. Turowski may also prescribe relaxants and/or pain medication.

How long does it take?

The Thermage procedure can take anywhere from an hour to three hours, depending on the size of the treatment area. Additional time may be required for skin preparation prior to the procedure.

What will my skin feel like after the procedure?

Immediately following a Thermage procedure, your skin should feel tighter, smoother and more youthful. Over time, you will notice additional tightening.

How many treatments will I need?

Unlike many laser procedures requiring four or more sessions, a single Thermage treatment has produced results in the majority of patients. Dr Turowski will determine the course of treatment that is right for you.

When will I see results?

Recently published studies, conducted by, Thermage show that measurable tightening improvements appear gradually over 2 to 6 months after a single treatment session. However, many patients have reported seeing an earlier response.

How long will the effects of the Thermage procedure last?

The Thermage procedure causes immediate tightening of the collagen structure, with additional tightening over time. Unpublished reports by experienced cosmetic physicians indicate that results may last 24 months or longer based on the patient’s natural aging process.

Is the Thermage procedure safe?

The Thermage procedure has an excellent safety record. With over 175,000 estimated worldwide patient treatments to date, the reported incidence of side effects is less than 0.4%. The most frequently reported incidents are classified as swelling, redness, bumps and blisters on or around the treated area. These side effects have usually disappeared in a few days. Consult with dr Turowski regarding this and any other questions you may have on the safety record of the Thermage procedure.

How long before I can return to my normal activities?

Most people return to their regular activities immediately following the Thermage procedure. Some people experience mild redness similar to a sunburn, but it usually disappears quickly. No special care is needed after treatment unless otherwise instructed by dr Turowski.

Vitalize Peel

The Vitalize Peel is a unique, break-through formulation of mild acids that provide a complete, consistent and safe peel with no “downtime” and predictable results for all skin types. This non-invasive peel creates a softer, smoother, younger looking complexion.

MicroPeel

The MicroPeel is a three-step process that removes a micro-thin top layer of skin. The top layer is a significant obstruction to having better skin because it is pore-clogged. This procedure is safe, effective, and is accomplished in 15-20 minutes.

MicroPeel Plus

The MicroPeel Plus is a fifteen minute in-office procedure that will help smooth fine lines and help even skin discoloration while simultaneously reducing the appearance of acne scars and environmental damage to the skin.

Pigment Peel Plus

The Pigment Peel Plus is a new TCA peel designed for stubborn pigmentation and fine lines. Unlike other La Roche-Posay peels, this is a medium-depth, in-office peel and has a brief recovery period.

Ultra Peel Forte Exfoliating Treatment

Those with resilient skin who have more dramatic wrinkling, sun damage, and acne scarring are the most suitable candidates for this deeper and more active treatment. Ultra Peel Forte will effectively treat aging skin, acne, pigment disorders, smoker’s skin, and photo-damaged skin. This treatment is ideal for dehydrated and aging skin in need of rejuvenation.

Sensi Peel Exfoliating Treatment

This gentle solution is formulated primarily for ethnic skin as well as all other extremely sensitive skin types. Sensi Peel will strengthen and brighten the skin, while helping to treat sun damage and other forms of hyper-pigmentation (skin discoloration). This multi-faceted treatment also provides anti-inflammatory, anti-acne, and antibacterial action, making it an excellent choice for helping to calm rosacea, as redness and inflammation can subside substantially after treatment.

Pumpkin Peel Treatment

PCA Professional Pumpkin Peel Treatment is a powerful antioxidant treatment that brightens and rejuvenates the skin. Pumpkin contains the highest concentration of salicylic acid of any plant, which provides the Pumpkin Peel Treatment with potent skin smoothing and pore clearing action. It also offers more than 100 beneficial components, including the highest concentration of vitamins A, C and beta-carotene found in any other fruit or vegetable. The treatment has simultaneous actions. It exfoliates and draws impurities out of the skin, while introducing vitamins, enzymes and nutrients into the skin. This is an excellent treatment for smokers, as it stimulates circulation, promotes healing and provides vitamin nutrition. This treatment is also great for smoothing the skin, as the naturally occurring salicylic acid in pumpkin removes the dead cells that cause a rough texture. There is no downtime. In fact, the skin will have a healthy glow following the treatment.

Oxygenating Trio

This is an antioxidant therapy to correct and prevent free radical damage as oxidative and environmental damage is one of the more significant contributors to the aging process. This treatment helps stimulate respiration and circulation within the skin. It helps promote healing and rejuvenates sluggish, stressed skin depleted by toxins, pollutants, allergens, improper diet and solar damage. Acneic conditions also benefit greatly. It is appropriate for use between peel treatments or when exfoliation or flaking is not desired. This treatment is also ideal two to three days before a special event. It draws oxygen to the skin’s surface, producing a rosy flush and a rapid warming sensation which results in a radiant, healthy look that lasts up to ten days.

Clarifying Mask Treatment

Clarifying Mask’s blend of 20% salicylic acid with cherry extract and other natural ingredients makes this an ideal choice for helping to improve acne, breakout-prone skin, and sluggish, dull complexions. Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits refine skin texture and bring new brightness and freshness to the skin.

Oxygenation / purification (Oxygenating Emulsion Oz2 w/ essential oils)

Improves microcirculation – essential oils create hyperemia, which improves intercellular exchanges, thereby increasing tissue oxygenation and toxin elimination, reducing stress.

Introduces antiseptic and bactericide action:

Another effect of essential oils combined with the oxygen found in oxygenating emulsion is microbial oxidation, and thus, a purification of the skin.

Beaute Neuve (Gentle Fruit Acid Enzyme Peel)

Beaute Neuve facial treatment combines medical research with skincare expertise to create a professional skin renewing treatment which can be used on all skin types, including those very sensitive.

Beaute Neuve goes the next step in high tech treatment techniques through the use of developed skin utilizing fruit acids with enzymacids which in combination create a peeling effect. A four-part program of approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour in duration, this unique facial treatment is designed to remove or minimize imperfections and bring the skin back to a renewed beauty and luminosity.

A radiant glowing complexion is proof of the efficacy of the Beaute Neuve treatment, with three treatments at one week intervals recommended to insure elimination of all skin imperfections.

Liftosome

The Liftosome Facial treatment is best suited for mature skins, and aims to energize, tighten and firm using Vitamin C to brighten the skin. Liftosome relaxes features, smoothes away fine lines and adds a luminous glow to the complexion.

Since both age and fatigue encourage sagging skin and a diminution of firmness caused by a combination of factors including a decrease in cellular cohesion and activity, diminution of elastic fiber synthesis, the effects of free radicals and UVA rays and poor oxygenation of the skin’s cells, this facial has been directly targeted to repair the damage. Designed as more than merely a “lifting” treatment, the LIFTOSOME FACIAL acts on two levels – vertically for a firming action and horizontally to tighten the skin. Visually its effects are immediate with skin visibly enhanced at its conclusion.

Tres Homme (Men’s facial)

The Tres Homme Facial utilizes high grade skincare products formulated specifically for a man’s skin and lifestyle. Intended to rid the skin of blackheads, ingrown hairs and roughness, the Tres Homme facial has been tremendously successful at treating the most common male skin conditions, and is appropriate to treat all skin types.

We are proud to offer the latest technology in laser hair removal. Nothing else compares! New Lightsheer Duet hair removal laser is available in our clinic, first in Chicago. It is a revolution. It replaces our previous gold standard in laser hair removal – Lightsheer laser that we used for the past few years. New Duet laser, with vacuum technology & larger head size has several advantages – no messy prep with gel, no need for topical anesthetic and much faster treatment time. This is especially important for large areas such as backs (Men! – they have no patience!) . But most important is improvement in pain – virtually none! Our patients love it. For the ones that were tired of the painful treatments this is a savior! They are signing up for the new parts of the body without hesitance. So far in Chicago we are the only clinic to offer this breakthrough technology! Remeber, there are a lot of choices in laser hair removal, they pop up on every corner. The difference is superior technology and great professional service. You decide!

Unwanted hair can be removed effortlessly and without discomfort. A non-invasive laser light source is used to remove unwanted hair from anywhere on the body.

How does the LightSheer Diode Laser System work?

The system emits near-infrared laser light that is absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicle. The laser is pulsed, or turned on, for only a fraction of a second. The duration of each pulse is just long enough to damage the follicle, while the system’s unique, patented contact-cooling handpiece, the ChillTip, helps protect the skin by conductive cooling during the laser energy delivery.

Why should I use the LightSheer Diode Laser System rather than the methods I’ve been using for years?

The LightSheer Diode Laser System’s design provides for enhanced comfort during treatment, minimal risk of infection, speed and accuracy. Since the system uses a unique cooling handpiece, it minimizes skin irritation that other methods may create. Since it is non-invasive (no needles to penetrate the skin), the risk of introducing bacteria into the skin is reduced. Because the system is fast, it allows for larger areas to be treated, considerably increasing the efficiency of the hair removal process, which allows more patients to be treated during a typical day. Finally, the LightSheer Diode Laser is a precise instrument that can be adjusted to damage only the hair follicle while minimally affecting the surrounding skin.

Does the LightSheer work on tanned or different skin colors?

The LightSheer diode laser system safely and effectively treats all skin types as well as tanned skin. For darker skin types and people with tans, appropriate amounts of energy are generally lower and appropriate pulse widths are generally longer to prevent damage to the skin. Using the appropriate treatment parameters, however, people with all skin types can benefit from laser hair removal with the LightSheer.

Are the Results Permanent?

The LightSheer laser has been cleared by the FDA for hair removal and permanent hair reduction on all skin types and tanned skin. To achieve a satisfactory level of clearance, 5-7 treatments are typically required.

Hair Transplanatation Chicago – New Horizons offers NeoGraft revolutionary patented hair transplant machine that automates FUE hair transplants. The NeoGraft machine is the product of several years of research and development. NeoGraft uses the most advanced instruments to achieve a level of excellence in the latest method of hair transplantation called FUE. An FUE hair transplant is the most beneficial type of hairtransplant for the patient. Before NeoGraft, FUE hair transplants could only be done manually. Most doctors do not offer a manual FUE procedure because it is a very tedious and time consuming procedure, which makes it too costly for most patients. The doctor must also become very skilled in this procedure in order to avoid a high transection rate of the follicles.

New Horizons offers NeoGraft revolutionary patented hair transplant machine that Doctors who do not use NeoGraft continue to use the traditional STRIP method which requires the doctor to surgically cut and remove a strip of scalp from the back of the head and suture the opening. The NeoGraft hair transplant machine eliminates the need for this type of painful surgical procedure. An FUE transplant using the NeoGraft machine is the least invasive technique for doing hair transplants, with the least complications. There is no cutting and no suturing with an FUE procedure and therefore there are no elongated elliptical scars produced at the back of the head as happens with a STRIP surgery. Often the scars do not allow the patient to wear short hair. Down time is minimal with a NeoGraft FUE procedure compared to the STRIP method and the FUE patient is not restricted in doing activities for about two weeks as is the STRIP patient . An Fue transplant simply removes each follicle separately from the back of the head and transplants it to the bald areas. NeoGraft harvests follicles of excellent quality with a low transection rate.

Hair restoration surgery – FAQ

1. What is NeoGraft™?

NeoGraft™ is a new device which facilitates the harvesting of follicles during an “FUE”-type hair transplant, dramatically improving the accuracy and speed over previously-used manual extraction instruments.

2. What is an “FUE” hair transplant?

“F.U.E.” or “Follicular-Unit Extraction” is an advanced, minimally-invasive hair transplant method which allows for the harvesting of individual follicles from the donor area without a scalpel or stitches, and therefore leaves no linear scar.

3. What are the main benefits of FUE over linear harvesting?

It is well-accepted that FUE transplants can heal faster and more comfortably than linear-harvest techniques using a scalpel and requiring stitches. With FUE, once healing is complete, the patient has the option of wearing a very short haircut without the worry of a tell-tale linear scar. Without the need for stitches, downtime is shorter with fewer activity restrictions post-operatively.

4. What are some benefits of NeoGraft™ over manual FUE techniques?

The highly ergonomic mechanical NeoGraft™ device works as a natural extension of the surgeons’ hand, allowing for faster and more accurate harvesting of hair follicles. NeoGraft™ patients now reach their goal with less time in the procedure room or fewer FUE procedures altogether.

5. Who is a good candidate for FUE using NeoGraft™?

Patients who would like the option of wearing a very short haircut in the back or sides of their scalp, or those who want the least amount of activity restriction (e.g. athletes) after their hair transplant procedure, may be good candidates for FUE with NeoGraft™. FUE can also be used for ‘scar camouflage’ procedures for patients who have had prior linear harvests, as well as for body hair transplants.

6. What are the major cost differences between FUE and linear-harvest hair transplant procedures?

The fee structure for FUE hair transplant procedures reflect the more detailed and intricate nature of those procedures compared to those performed with a linear harvest.

7. Are the final transplanted ‘results’ any different with FUE/NeoGraft™ than those achieved with linear harvesting?

Results are similar. FUE procedures, by default, yield grafts that contain mainly one, two, three, or four follicles called “follicular units.” Linear harvests, which are then microscopically dissected by a team into grafts of one, two or three follicles, would also yield similar ‘follicular-unit’ grafts. Provided that in each case the grafts are implanted with care, artistry and precision into the recipient area, the final transplanted results with FUE would be similar, if not identical, to those accomplished with a linear harvest. The difference is not in the area of hair growth, but how the donor area is harvested either by a strip of scalp or by small individual graft extractions.

8. Is FUE/NeoGraft™ suitable for both men and women?

Yes. Because FUE/NeoGraft™ is a minimally-invasive procedure, it is a viable option for both men and women looking to restore their own living and growing hair with transplantation.

9. Do I have to get a total ‘buzz cut’ to have an FUE/NeoGraft procedure?

No, but it helps. If your donor hair is long enough, harvesting using the FUE/NeoGraft can be done by shaving small areas which can be covered by your other, existing hair. For maximum yield however, a buzz cut is recommended in the donor area.

10. Am I a good candidate for a procedure using FUE/NeoGraft?

The best way to determine whether you are a candidate for hair transplant using FUE/NeoGraft is a one-on-one consultation with your doctor.

Venous insufficiency is a condition where blood pools in the vein rather than being efficiently pumped back to the heart. Leg problems are widespread throughout the world affecting approximately 50-60% of the population. What most people do not know is that approximately 90% of leg disorders originate within the vein. If you have tired, aching, swollen legs, swollen ankles or the beginning of varicose veins , it is time to learn how to improve the health of your venous circulation. Vein problems can progressively worsen over time and can affect your health and well-being for the rest of your life. Anything that slows down the flow of blood, changes or damages the vein wall or venouse valves, or thickens the blood can lead to venous insuficiency.

Venous insufficiency can lead to varicose veins, phlebitis (inflammation of the veins), thrombophlebitis (clots in the inflamed veins), blood clots and changes in the skin including leg ulcers. These can be not only cosmetically displeasing but also medically significant and a danger to your health.

Varicose veins and broken vessels removal – FAQ

1. what are the “Danger Signals”?

In most cases, leg problems do not occur just “out of the blue.” There are typical warning signs such as:

Heavy, hot or tired legs.

Feeling of tension, cramps, fatigue or stabbing of the calves.

Swollen ankles.

First signs of varicose veins.

bulging of hte veins in the legs

broken capillaries

2. What are the risk factors?

High-fat, low -fiber diet.

Obesity.

Lack of exercise.

Jobs requiring prolonged standing or sitting.

Hereditary.

Surgery or Trauma.

Infectious disease.

Pregnancy.

Use of hormones, medication.

Age over 40.

3. What are the symptoms of the vein disease?

Chronic venous insufficiency is a condition in which the veins are constantly congested with pooled blood causing circulation to be significantly impaired. Symptoms include:

Edema or swelling.

Feeling of heaviness in the leg.

Pain or cramps in the calves.

Uncomfortable puffiness of the feet and ankles that subsides during the night.

Skin discolorations.

Dermatitis. (skin problems)

Dry or weeping eczema.

Venous ulcer.

A venous leg ulcer is an open wound that usually forms in the ankle and is due to chronic poor circulation. The ulcer has a weeping raw appearance and the skin surrounding the ulcer is dry, itchy, and brownish or blackish in color. Venous leg ulcers are usually slow to heal and cause a great deal of morbidity.

4. What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are unsightly and uncomfortable veins that have lost their ability to take the blood from the legs back up to the heart and lungs. This reversal of flow overfills the veins giving a bulging varicose appearance. The swollen veins cause aching, heavy, tired legs, night cramps, itching and other symptoms.

5. Do I need these veins for my circulation, and where does the blood go?

Varicose veins are part of the superficial venous system which returns only 5-10% of the blood flow from the legs back to the heart. Varicose veins are really normal vessels that have an abnormal amount of blood in them. They become dilated and blood is not moved efficiently through them. Varicose veins are dilated vessels in shich the blood is not moving efficeintly. They are actually a burden to your circulation. When the varicose veins are eliminated, the legs should feel lighter and more vibrant as evidence of the improved circulation. This is because the body has rerouted the blood flow into stronger, healthier, deeper veins.

6. Do varicose veins come back?

The microsurgical procedure removes the veins permanently. Sclerotherapy destroys the veins so they will not return once treatment is complete. Neither procedure, however, will prevent new veins from forming.

7. What are spider veins?

Spider veins are tiny dilated blood vessels located just below the surface of the skin often appearing darker and more prominent, being red, blue or purple in color due to their location.

8. What causes spider veins?

Spider veins are formed when the veins become dilated and swollen with stagnant blood. Pregnancy and hormone variations may stimulate their appearance.

New Horizons offers their clients several treatment options

The procedures recommended are based upon the severity of your condition. All patients are instructed to walk a great deal following treatment to reroute the blood to the deeper, healthier veins. Compression stockings are used to assist in healing and to reduce any mild discomfort or swelling that may occur. The procedures may include.

Endovenous laser therapy (EVLT)

Endovascular laser therapy is the most effective and least invasive procedure to treat your symptoms. This is an alternative to traditional stripping in the long saphenous vein that would be the source or the cause of the bulging surface veins and of symptoms of pain, fatigue, etc. Using local anesthesia, a thin laser fiber is inserted into the vein through a needle delivering energy to the vein while causing it to collapse and seal shut; thus, eliminating the vein and eliminating the cause of the symptoms.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

This is a “microsurgical” approach for large bulging varicose veins through the surface of the skin. Under local anesthesia, the diseased veins are delicately extracted using specially designed hooks. The incisions are truly stab wounds and are so small, no stiches are requird and there is virtually no scarring.

Sclerotherapy / ultrasound-guided therapy

This involves the injection of a solution into the diseased veins causing them to shrink, close off and gradually disappear. For large varicosities, ultrasound is often used to guide the injections into underlying vessels not seen on the surface of the skin. This delivers medication into a precise location safely and accurately to achieve superior long-lasting results.

Laser spider vein treatment

A laser generates an intense beam of light that can selectively target a treatment site. The laser light is absorbed by oxyhemoglobin (bright red blood cells carrying oxygen) and melanin (black or brown pigment found in the skin) causing decomposition or destruction by heat of unwanted cells while leaving healthy cells intact.

Laser spider vein treatment – FAQ

What are the benefits of laser surgery?
The benefits of laser treatment over alternative therapies may include improved therapeutic results precisely controlled surgery which limits injury to normal skin, fewer complications and a safe and effective outpatient, same day surgery for vascular and pigmented lesions.

What is a vascular lesion?

A vascular lesion is formed by abnormally large or numerous blood vessels located directly under the surface of the skin. These vessels may be visible through the skin and may result in a red appearance of the skin.

What is a pigmented lesion?

Melanin is the dark pigment present in skin and is produced by melanocytes. Pigmented lesions occur when an abundance of melanocytes are found in the skin. Lesions may be flat or slightly raised.

What Conditions are treated with the Laser?

Vascular Lesion:

Facial Telangiectasia – surface veins caused by dilation of capilary vessels or arterioles.

Cherry Angiomas – slightly raised, red lesions.

Spider Angiomas – slightly raised, red spider-like lesions.

Scar Neovascularization – redness that may appear in or around a scar.

Rosacea – red facial lesions around the nose and cheeks causing a sunburn look.

Spider Veins – small, superficial purple or red veins stretching like a web under the skin, often appearing on legs.

What should a patient expect during treatment ?

Treatment may vary depending upon patient characteristics and the area being treated. An individual treatment program will be developed by your physician. Treatment sessions typically take 10-15 minutes. Patients are advised to remove make-up in the treatment area and to avoid tanning prior to scheduling a treatment.

You will be placed in a reclined position and asked to wear special goggles to protect your eyes from the intense beam of laser light. The doctor will use a pen-like handpiece to direct a beam of laser light to the lesion. Some patients report feeling a slight stinging sensation during treatment so a cooling gel or system may be used to help alleviate any discomfort.

What should a patient expect after treatment?

Some redness may occur in the treatment area immediately following treatment; however, it should subside within several hours. Some swellling may also be experienced and will go away in 1-2 days. Unlike older technologies, laser treatment will not cause any purple skin discoloration or bruised appearance to the treated skin.

Postoperative care is minimal. Your doctor may ask you to use anti-bacterial ointment on the treated area for a short period of time and will suggest that you stay out of the sun during the healing process.

Final treatment results should be evident 10-14 days after treatment for vascular lesions and within 2-3 weeks after treatment for pigmented lesions. In the meantime, normal activities can be resumed with only a slight redness evident at the treatment area.

How will I know if laser treatment is right for me?

Ask your doctor. After a brief examination, your doctor will determine if laser treatment is appropriate for you.

Do I need to schedule an appointment ?

Since treatment only takes a few minutes, your physician may be able to perform the procedure today. Ask your doctor for details.

Vein problems are sometimes not only a cosmetic problems

They can be related to real medical problems such as leg pains and skin ulcerations. Therefor they can be covered by the medical insurance.

Vein problems – FAQ

Will my insurance pay for treatment?

The initial consultation and ultrasound is usually covered. For large varicosities, diagnostic testing and treatment is covered and is deemed medically necessary depending on your symptoms. Treatment of spider veins, however, is considered cosmetic and is not covered by insurance.

How long will my treatment take?

Treatments for normal office visit for sclerotherapy are 25-30 minutes. For the endovascular venous laser therapy and ambulatory phlebectomy, the procedure usually takes 30-40 minutes with total time in the office approximately 90 minutes including preoperative and postoperative time. Healing will take place over several weeks. Your veins will be gone leaving you with healthy, symptom-free and better looking legs.

Are there any restrictions to my activity?

No, there are no restrictions. Exercise is encouraged. The more you walk, the bet ter the long-term results will be.

How long does it take to look better?

Following treatment, the veins may look darker in color with some bruising because blood may become trapped within the veins so they close down. This is expected and is addressed during your subsequent treatment sessions. The tiniest spider veins may disappear quicly while the larger veins require a few weeks to improve their appearance. Healing can take approximately up to 8 weeks.

Labiaplasty is a cosmetic genital surgical procedure that will reduce the size or change the shape of the small lips on the outside of the vagina (the labia minora). Many women are born with large or irregular labia. Others develop this condition after childbirth or with aging. The appearance of the enlarged labia can cause embarrassment with a sexual partner or loss of self esteem. Some women just want to look “prettier” like the women they see in magazines or in films. Chronic labial irritation can sometimes develop in women who wear tight clothing. Discomfort can occur with sex, sports or other physical activities. Labiaplasty can greatly enhance the cosmetic appearance of the outer vagina giving many women greater confidence and self esteem. Women whose labia become irritated and painful will often find relief after surgery.

Labiaplasty FAQ

I Don’t Have Children. Can I Still Have A Labiaplasty?

Yes. Whether you have had children or not is not the issue. The issue is whether the enlarged labia cause physical discomfort or unhappiness because of their appearance.

Where Is The Labiaplasty Surgery Performed?

The surgeries are performed in our private, AAAHC accredited outpatient surgical center.

What Is The Average Length Of Labiaplasty Procedure?

The average length of Labiaplasty Procedure is about 1 hour.

What Type Of Anesthesia Is Used For Labiaplasty Surgery?

Labiaplasty can be performed under local anesthesia or under sedation delivered by a Board Certified Anesthesiologist. You can be asleep during the procedure and will awaken within minutes after the surgery is completed. You will not be paralyzed or intubated during the surgery. Please note that we offer a choice of local anesthesia or sedation. We feel that some of our patients are more comfortable using this form of anesthesia.

What Are the Risks Involved In Labiaplasty Surgery?

The most common risks of surgery may include bleeding, infection, and scarring, however these are very unusual. Most patients recover within few days and resume their activities almost immediately.

What Is The Postoperative Period Like?

You will have discomfort at the surgical site for the first few days, which will then decrease. All patients are sent home with prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics. Full healing takes approximately six weeks. All sutures used are absorbable and therefore do not need to be removed.

How Many Post Operative Visits Are Required After Labiaplasty Surgery?

For our patients we recommend post operative visits at two days, four weeks and eight weeks to insure proper healing and excellent results. For our patients from out of town we recommend, if at all possible, a post operative visit at three to four weeks.

When Can I Return To Work Post Labiaplasty Surgery?

Most patients return to work in two days after surgery. Medical excuse letters for work are available upon request.

When Can I Resume Exercise Post Labiaplasty Surgery?

We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for at least two weeks aftersurgery.

When Can I Resume Sexual Activity Post Labiaplasty Surgery?

Sexual activity usual can resume six weeks after the Labiaplasty.

Will Labiaplasty Surgery Result In Decrease In Sensation?

For the vast majority of women the clitoris is the structure associated with sensory pleasure, not the labia. As such you should not notice any loss of pleasurable sensation after surgery.

Will Labiaplasty Alter The Skin Surrounding My Clitoris?

Usually this area is not altered during the surgery. Some women do have excessive skin in this area and it can be trimmed to give a more pleasing and natural appearance at the time of surgery. This can be discussed at the time of consultation.

Will My Sexual Partner Notice A Difference After My Labiaplasty Surgery?

If the labia were interfering with intercourse, both of you will notice an improvement. Visually, your partner should notice that your labia are now smaller and better proportioned.

Does Insurance Cover The Cost Of Labiaplasty Surgery?

Insurance usually does not cover this surgery because it is considered elective cosmetic procedure.

Are Financing Plans Available?

Yes. We have arrangements with two financial institutions for no interest and low interest financing of your surgery.

If I Do Not Live In The Chicago Area, Can I Schedule My Consultation The Same Day As Surgery?

Yes. Many of our out of town patients have their consultations a day prior to surgery. At this time we perform a physical exam and discuss the surgery that interest you in full detail.

Why Choose CoolLipo?

As we grow older our skin begins to show the signs of sun, lifestyle, and aging. The face and neck are exposed to the sun more than any other part of the body; therefore, they both tend to age more quickly. As these aging effects begin to appear we look for topical formulas and non-invasive treatments to help reduce future aging, plus improve current appearance. Many prefer not to undergo extensive surgical face and neck lifts due to the expense and risk. Additionally, these procedures require significant time for the face and neck to heal, not always an option for people with limited recovery time.

Cool Lipo (laser-assisted lipolysis) is a new, minimally invasive technology that liquefies fat for easy removal. It is a laser-based procedure that breaks up and removes fat cells in areas such as under the chin, neck, and jowls or areas with loose skin such as the arms. In addition, the unique wavelength of the CoolLipo laser system directly contracts collagen and tightens the skin, an effect not seen with standard liposuction.

Benefits

Gentle fat disruption and removal technique for small areas

Treats areas that are difficult for conventional liposuction

Less invasive than a neck or face lift

May be performed under local anesthesia only

Short procedure in your physician’s office

Safe with minimal bruising and side effects

Minimal downtime post-procedure

Body lifting procedures were originally designed for the correction of the excess skin in a massive weight loss situation caused by patient’s gastric bypass surgery. However, over time, after these techniques were refined, the procedures started to be useful for the patients with cosmetic surgery needs. In selected cases these techniques can be very useful for the correction of loose skin and contour deformities. The most powerful is so called “belt lipectomy”, which involves removal of the “spare tire” around the waist, leading to not only tightening of the abdomen and flanks but also buttock and thigh lifting.

It is a surgical procedure designed to flatten a protruding abdomen by tightening the muscles in the abdominal wall while removing excess fatty tissue and skin. It is usually required in a situation of post-pregnancy changes or after massive weight loss. The procedure underwent many improvements over the years. Ideal shape is achieved by performing either a mini-abdominoplasty or so called lateral tension abdominoplasty. Most of the time it is combined with ultrasonic liposuction.

Tummy tuck FAQ

Who is a candidate?

A protuberant abdomen can be the result of excess fat, weak abdominal muscles, pregnancy or loose skin that has been over-stretched and no longer responds to diet and exercise. Also, for those who have experienced a massive weight loss, their only alternative to loose overhanging skin is surgery. The procedure is very common and can benefit both men and women. Frequently, it can be combined with other surgeries such as breast augmentation, liposuction or hysterectomy. Dr. Turowski will gladly work with patient’s gynecologist to arrange for a combined hysterectomy/abdominoplasty procedure.

How is abdominoplasty performed?

The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia to provide not only complete pain relief but also relaxation of abdominal wall necessary for optimal muscle tightening. Various surgical techniques can be used, depending on your goals and your specific problem. In some cases, a mini-abdominoplasty (combination of liposuction, muscle tightening and below the navel skin removal) may suffice. For those with severe laxity of abdominal muscles or excessive skin, a full tummy tuck may be the best solution.

During abdominoplasty an incision is made in your bikini area and after liposuction, excess amount of skin is removed and muscles are tightened with permanent sutures. In mini-abdominoplasty, no incision is made around the navel. The incision is closed right above pubic hair area resulting in low lying, transverse scar.

What is the typical recovery?

The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis although some patients prefer to stay overnight in the hospital. Any pain or discomfort that follows surgery can be controlled with oral medications. To avoid fluid build up the drains are placed during surgery. They remain in place for a few days until discharged fluids decrease. During your recovery you must refrain from any strenuous activity or heavy lifting for about 4 to 6 weeks. Most patients return to work after about one week.

Liposuction remains the most popular cosmetic procedure according to the recent statistics provided by The American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The procedure enjoys such popularity because it allows safe and effective removal of unwanted, stubborn fat deposits through very small inconspicuous incisions. Liposuction was developed in the early eighties and since then underwent many refinements including introduction of lipoplasty, liposculpture, tumescent liposuction and ultrasonic liposuction.

Liposuction FAQ

Who is a candidate?

Liposuction can be performed on anybody who has excessive pockets of fat and has a proper skin tone. This is not necessarily directly related to the age of patient. If the skin is loose and inelastic, some additional procedures such as abdominoplasty or face lifting may be necessary. Liposuction can result in a permanent recontouring of the almost any area of the body such as neck, chest abdomen, arms and legs. This can offer a new shape for people who never thought it was possible, giving a psychological boost and the incentive to exercise even more than before to improve the rest of their physique. However, liposuction is not a weight loss technique, and is not a cure for overall obesity.

Is liposuction safe?

If performed by a qualified, board certified plastic surgeon, liposuction has become remarkably safe, although some risks do persists. In unusual situations, removal of very large amounts of fat can still result in moderate blood loss, and may require overnight hospital stay. Infection is extremely uncommon.

How is liposuction performed?

A very small incision is made near the area of fat to be removed. A tumescent solution (a mixture of local anesthetic and epinephrine) is first injected. This solution allows not only for pain control but also minimizes blood loss occurring during this procedure due to action of epinephrine which constricts surrounding blood vessels. Then a thin, smooth hollow tube (a cannula), with the size of a small straw, is inserted and connected to a negative pressure vacuum. The vacuum sucks the fat out leaving the skin, nerves and blood vessels intact. This allows Dr. Turowski to carefully sculpt area into a new, improved contour.

Depending on the magnitude of the procedure it can be performed under local anesthesia or intravenous sedation. In some cases, general anesthesia might be the best option.

What is the typical recovery?

To reduce swelling and bruising, at the end of the procedure, a snug-fitting garment similar to a girdle is applied over the treated areas. The procedure is usually done on the outpatient basis, so you will be able to go home the same day as your surgery. In unusual cases where the amount of fat removed is very large, Dr Turowski may recommend overnight hospital stay for postoperative monitoring.

Most patients are mobile immediately after liposuction and quiet activity can be usually resumed within a few days. However, for the best results it is prudent to wait a few weeks before resuming strenuous activity and exercises. Compression garments have to be worn 2 to 3 weeks after liposuction. You may feel bruised and sore as if you?d over-exercised that part of the body.

Does the fat come back?

Fat cells do not regenerate so the contour changes should be permanent. However, if you gain weight, the fat cells that are left behind will get bigger, just as all of the other fat cells in the body do. Still, your body should retain the improved proportions.

What is ultrasonic liposuction?

This is the latest technique to improve and refine the results of liposuction. It utilizes ultrasonic energy or very fast vibration of the cannula to brake fibrous attachments between fat cells. It allows for more complete and smooth fat removal. Although not recommended for all liposuction procedures, ultrasonic liposuction may be very helpful in fat removal from the back, upper abdomen and especially from the male chest (ginekomastia).

Is usually suggested for women with smaller, under-developed breasts or on women who have experienced undesirable change in breast size or shape due to pregnancy, weight loss or aging process. Breast augmentation is generally very successful at making breast larger and makes them appear fuller and better shaped. Usually, enlarged breasts look very natural and less saggy. Depending on the original breast shape, some women may require additional surgeries, such as breast lift, to achieve most desirable results. During the initial consultation our plastic surgeon will discuss your concerns and will outline the plan for treatment. He will explain technical intricacies of the procedure and will help you decide which incision option and size of the breast will best meet your cosmetic goals.

	Breast augmentation FAQ

What kinds of implants are used for breast augmentation?

The last chapter of the silicone breast implants saga was closed in November 2007. After 14 years of deliberations FDA decided that the medical evidence was sufficiently positive to let these devices back on the market. Science has prevailed. US women will have the same options as others around the world had for years. Introduced first in 1962, since 1992 silicone breast implants had been available only as a part of research studies. I was a part of this research effort and for the past 14 years, we were able to use these devices only in selected patients, either afflicted with breast cancer or other special circumstances. Since then, most studies have failed to find a link between silicone implants and cancer, connective tissue disorders and other diseases. Breasts augmentations have grown in popularity despite media controversy. Last year almost 300 000 women had their breast enlarged in the United States, a 37% increase since 2000. Until 2007 most of them used the saline or salt water solution rather than silicone. These were never limited. However since the silicone breast implants have been officially approved for the primary breast augmentation, this situation has completely changed. In my pracitce currently 8 out 10 women choose silicone implants over saline implants. This follows a worldwide trend of the breast enlargement procedures where over 90% of breast enlargement procedures utilize silicone rather than saline. The advantage is clear: silicone feels softer and looks more natural. Once the girls start to talk and touch – the cat will be out of the sack. Now some regulatory issues: the FDA is allowing the devices for women who are at least 22. These implants are considered not a lifetime device and some patients will need at least one additional surgery to remove and replace these implants. MRI studies maybe recommended to follow these surgeries. Manufactures will replace all leaking or ruptured implants and give life time warranty and defray costs of replacements for 10 years.

	How is breast enlargement done?

The procedure consists of creating a pocket under the breast tissue and placing a soft, natural-feeling implant material underneath the breast and the pectoral muscle. Most if not all augmentations are performed in the submuscular position but in rare cases exact position of the implant (subglandular or submuscular) can only be recommended by our plastic surgeon after the clinical evaluation of the patient. There is a variety of implants designs and our plastic surgeon will review with you potential advantages of certain designs during a consultation.

What kind of scars can I expect?

Since the saline implants are inserted deflated and are injected with saline only while inside the body the incision can be kept to minimal (usually shorter than an inch). Moreover, although incisions are minimal, every attempt is made to hide them either in the arm pit or under the areola, where they can be barely noticeable on the border of lighter and darker skin. Axillary (armpit) approach requires minimally invasive endoscopic video techniques which are readily available to our plastic surgeons. Silicone implants are fully inflated before insertion and therefore the incision has to be slightly larger . Still usually barely noticebable if placed around the areaola or through the armipit endoscopic approach. We usually try to stay away from the under the breast (inframmary) insertion sites since the healing in this area is quite unpredictable and may lead to conspicous scarring

Am I going to loose nipple sensation?

Minimally invasive techniques utilized by our plastic surgeons very infrequently result in nipple sensation alteration. Nipple sensation loss is extremely uncommon and is independent of the incision site chosen. The nipples may actually be hypersensitive (e.g. more sensitive) for some time after surgery.

What kind of anesthesia is used for breast augmentation?

With the current advanced anesthesia techniques the best and safe way to perform breast augmentation is to do the procedures under deep intravenous sedation with patient totally unaware of the ongoing surgical action. This allows for pain-free surgical procedure while permitting avoidance of risky chest wall injections for local pain control. Postoperative nausea is minimized by this approach and there are no complaints of postoperative sore throat, hoarseness typical for general anesthesia and tracheal intubations.

How long does the procedure take?

Although the surgical time for breast augmentation may vary depending on particular patient’s situation, it generally requires less than one hour of anesthesia time.

Do I have to stay in the hospital?

Breast augmentation is typically an outpatient procedure (patient returns home after she is recovered from anesthesia). However, to accommodate some patients’ social needs an overnight stay and nursing support can be arranged.

	What is the typical recovery?

After surgery, the patient is wrapped in a compressive dressing. The following morning the dressing is removed and she is placed in a soft bra. The discomfort after the breast augmentation procedure can be significant. Therefore, our plastic surgeons are using revolutionary pain control system, the so-called “pain pump” (N-Q system). This disposable device, which is placed during surgery, delivers local anesthetic directly to the operative site, providing over 24 hrs of pain relief. The device is then easily removed during the day after surgery postoperative visit. Routine activities can usually be resumed within few days. Sports and exercises can be resumed within few weeks.
